These can cause irreversible damage to the fabric’s color integrity.We generally recommend neutral detergents, identifiable by the ‘pH-neutral’ label on packaging.
Given Tencel’s silk-like softness, detergents formulated for silk are also suitable. With the growing diversity of delicate fabrics, such specialized cleaners have become widely accessible.
Avoid Prolonged Washing Duration
1️⃣ The exceptionally smooth hand feel of silk pillowcase stems from its sleek fiber surface, which simultaneously reduces fiber cohesion and abrasion resistance.
2️⃣ This inherent property necessitates a departure from traditional soaking methods.Avoid pre-soaking silk pillowcase in water, as prolonged immersion accelerates fiber swelling and structural weakening.
3️⃣ Load silk pillowcase directly into the washing machine and initiate the cycle immediately. Opt for gentle cycles—avoid 'quick wash,' 'heavy-duty,' or 'high-speed spin' modes to minimize mechanical friction.
5️⃣ Remove the silk pillowcase promptly after washing to prevent creasing and fiber distortion caused by prolonged moisture retention.
Use the "Silk/Wool" Cycle for Machine Washing
Modern washing machines typically offer specialized programs such as 'Silk,' 'Wool,' or 'Delicate' cycles.
We strongly recommend using these modes for Tencel fabrics to preserve fiber integrity.
For larger items like duvet covers and pillowcases, turn them inside out before washing to enhance protection of Tencel's signature softness and smooth texture.
Avoid cotton or standard cycles, as their aggressive agitation and spin speeds may compromise the fabric's luxurious hand feel over time.
Iron at Low Temperature
While post-wash wrinkles often prompt ironing before storage, it is critical to use medium-to-low heat settings (≤150°C) for silk pillowcase. High-temperature modes, though effective for immediate smoothing, induce irreversible fiber degradation.
Excessive heat weakens silk pillowcase fibrils, causing loss of surface smoothness and fibril fracturing.
These compromised fibers later manifest as pilling and abrasive texture upon reuse due to increased inter-fiber friction.
The glass transition temperature (Tg) of lyocell fibers (~160°C) is lower than cotton’s (~200°C). Prolonged heat above Tg disrupts hydrogen bonds between cellulose chains, leading to reduced crystallinity and fiber embrittlement—key factors in post-ironing pilling propensity.
STEP 1 Preparation for wash
Begin by thoroughly inspecting the care labels on all bedding items to confirm approved washing methods and restrictions.
Separate duvet covers, fitted sheets, and pillowcases before loading to prevent entanglement during agitation, which could cause fiber abrasion or uneven cleaning.
STEP 2 Stain Pre-Treatment Protocol for Tencel Fabric
Apply a mild liquid detergent or silk-specific cleanser to the stained area. Prioritize pH-neutral formulas (6-8) to prevent fiber swelling or dye bleeding.
Gently dab or knead the solution into the stain using fingertips (no nails). Circular motions should cover ≤5cm diameter to localize treatment.
Strictly avoid bleach (even oxygen-based) and enzymatic detergents, as they hydrolyze cellulose chains in Tencel, causing permanent fiber pitting.
STEP 3 Choose detergent
Opt for liquid detergents explicitly designed for silk and delicate fibers, as their mild surfactants (e.g., lauryl glucoside) clean without stripping Tencel’s natural softness or luster.
STEP 4 Washing process
After starting the washing machine, ensure the bedding can move freely to avoid excessive twisting and friction. Do not wash Tencel bedding with other heavy items to prevent friction and fiber damage.
STEP 5 Gently squeeze the moisture
After the wash cycle, press (do not wring) the bedding gently between your palms to remove excess water. Aggressive twisting disrupts Tencel’s fibril alignment, causing permanent micro-tears.
STEP 6 Drying method
Dry Tencel bedding in a shaded, well-ventilated area to prevent UV-induced color fading and fiber degradation. Horizontal lay-flat drying preserves fabric drape and minimizes tension stress.f using a dryer, select low-heat (<60°C) or air-fluff cycles. Excessive heat disrupts hydrogen bonds in lyocell fibers, leading to shrinkage and surface roughening.
